Where to begin with June...she's such a boggle of Rosa Luxembourg, and Mrs. Macbeth

As a REAL FDR, TRUMAN, HUMPHREY democrat, I have learned that to many of today's dem's schooled by people like this hate filled bag of 'estrogenic ahistoric america is evil by heritage of being begun by slave owning white men while ignoring 9 year old Aisha', regard people like me as no tonly spinels, but "spineless war criminals" was the direct quote of someone who claimed to be on Ted Kennedy's staff to me (about Joe Biden and Joe Lieberman).

Now as someone who both took part in many, and helped organize protests in 1969+ I have always found this kind of view odd to say the least. However it is iconic how how far around the bend the debate has gone, and should send a thrill of alarm through every American over non binding resolutions.

Here we have Ms. "June Scorza Terpstra", teaching academic at Loyola University, who, I have a feeling is not going to take back a word, apologize or enter some Foleyesque rehab for overwrought haters.

During a heated debate in a class I teach on social justice, several US Marines who had done tours in Iraq told me that they had "sacrificed" by “serving” in Iraq so that I could enjoy the freedom to teach in the USA. Parroting their master’s slogan about “fighting over there so we don’t have to fight over here,” these students proudly proclaimed that they terrorized and killed defenseless Iraqis. They intimated that their Arab victims are nothing more to them than collateral damage, incidental to their receipt of some money and an education.

The good news is that Mr. Arkin has suddenly become a centrist compared to this kind of idiot. The bad news is that Mr. Arkin has suddenly become a centrist compared to this kind of idiot.

I will ask again the question which assumes the worst.
What, Ms. Terpstra do you imagine went on on Saipan in 1944? On Edson's Bloody Ridge in 1942? In the Shenandoah Valley from 1862-65? During Grierson's Raid in 1862?

You can't imagine the hatred they have for America. They absolutely despise it and want it to be destroyed. They are doing a pretty damn good job of it too.

I doubt that the American soldiers in this Leftist's class terrorized innocent Iraquis. But civilians do get killed in war and there is nothing you can do to stop it. If the war is worth fighting, that's the price you pay.

However, Sherman's deliberate targeting of civilians in the Civil War is certainly no argument in favor of doing that today. Sherman was a war criminal who should have been hanged. Imagine if Saddam would have used such an argument at his trial, in order to establish murder as a precedent. He was hanged for killing 100+ civilians. Sherman killed many more, burned down Atlanta, rounded up Georgia civilians and had them sent to the interior to work as white slaves. So Saddam's acts were but a pale repetition of an American "hero." We wouldn't accept such an argument from Saddam, and we shouldn't rely on such arguments to justify our just war in Iraq.

Stogie, WT Sherman killed fewer civilians per capita than ANY other union general..try THIS
His war was one of maneuver not battle, ad in fact, it was Hood who was responsible for the carnage near and in Atlanta, most of it in an effort to deprive the Yankees of sustenance there.

Sharman's mission was to destroy the will of the heart of the south to resist. His attitude was, 'the crueler it is the faster it is over'.

His dictums are right today.

"All attempts to make war easy and safe will end in death and humiliation"

Woah,
You know, I love Stogie, but I find myself disagreeing with him so vehemently on some issues that I am simply astounded.

Stogie,

We have won three wars decisively in our history;

Japan
Germany
The American Civil War

We won all by absolutely anihilating our enemy and then, after they were ready to give up, we delivered the coup de grace blow,

atomic bomb
firebombing of Dresden
"Scorhed Earth"

that's the way war works. to argue with that is the same thing as arguing against the wind.

something tells me you have some other axe to grind here.

If Stogie is from the south, I understand.

PIM only recently could stand the mention of Sherman's name.

Yeah, I understand, but that's why I said, he seems to have some other axe to grind.

It seems to me, reasonable as he is, that he knows how we won WWII.

Well, we won the Civil War the same way.

Too bad, huh? sorry to be cavalier, but I don't buy the economics arguments on the Civil War. The Articles of Secession all explicitly stated that slavery was the reason.
